\u00dcber das Wanderinteresse hinaus ist der Berner Hang des Gemmipasses sowohl historisch als auch geologisch interessant.<\/p>

Zun\u00e4chst ist zu erw\u00e4hnen, dass die Hauptroute (im historischen Sinne) die von der Gemmi absteigt, dem rechten Ufer des Daubensees folgt, seitlich die Winteregg \u00fcberquert und schliesslich Kandersteg erreicht. Dennoch und trotz der Tatsache, dass dieser andere Weg erhebliche Abgr\u00fcnde aufweist, wurde der Weg ins Gasterntal auch schon seit der Antike genutzt. Er quert den Gurnigel, der auf modernen Karten als Durchgang in der Felswand unterhalb der Tatelishore markiert ist. Als Gurgnigel wurden jedoch im Mittelalter alle Weiden, auch jene der Spittelmatte, bezeichnet. Der Ortsname Spittelmatte (Hospizweide) deutet darauf hin, dass es dort einen Gasthof gegeben haben muss, der Reisende \u00fcber die Gemmi willkommen hiess. Wenn keine Spur eines solchen Geb\u00e4udes gefunden wurde, liegt das daran, dass der Ort direkt unterhalb des Altels liegt, von dem aus es zu mehreren Stein- und Eisschl\u00e4ge kam.<\/p>

Hervorzuheben ist auch eine interessante Tatsache: Die Kantonsgrenze folgt nicht dem Bergr\u00fccken des Gemmipasses, sondern liegt viel weiter unten auf Berner Seite. Dies erkl\u00e4rt die Tatsache, dass das Gasthaus Schwarenbach vollst\u00e4ndig auf Walliser Boden liegt.<\/p>

Um von der Gemmi aus \u00fcber den Gurnigel ins Gasterntal zu gelangen, lohnt es sich, in dieses herrliche Alpental abzusteigen. Trotz seines wilden Aussehens war dieses Tal der Ausl\u00f6ser einer Trag\u00f6die, die sich beim Bohren des ersten L\u00f6tschbergtunnels zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ereignete. Tats\u00e4chlich glaubte man damals, dass man, sobald man mit dem Ausheben des Felsens in der N\u00e4he von Kandersteg begann, im Muttergestein bleiben w\u00fcrden. Dabei wurde nicht ber\u00fccksichtigt, dass die Talsohle des Gasterntals mit 200 m Wasser und Ger\u00f6ll gef\u00fcllt ist. Als die Arbeiter den Felsen durchbohrten, um ins Gasterntal zu gelangen, kam es zu einer Flut aus Ger\u00f6ll und Wasser, der die Arbeiter mit sich riss. Nach dieser Trag\u00f6die hatten sich in der Talsohle Einst\u00fcrze gebildet und es wurden mehrere L\u00f6sungen gepr\u00fcft, eine davon bestand darin, den Boden rund um den Tunnel einzufrieren, damit er sicher gebohrt werden konnte. Die L\u00f6sung bestand schliesslich darin, den Tunnel entlang des Gasterntals zu bohren, um es viel weiter flussaufw\u00e4rts zu umgehen. Auf diese Weise k\u00f6nnen wir anhand der topografischen Karten erkennen, dass die Tunnelanf\u00e4nge an den beiden Eing\u00e4ngen perfekt ausgerichtet sind, der Tunnel jedoch nach Osten ausweicht.<\/p>

Hier folgten wir dem linken Ufer des Daubensees, der, auch wenn er nicht der historischen Route entspricht, deutlich weniger begangen ist. Am Ende des Daubensees finden wir den offiziellen Weg und es dauert nicht lange, bis man am Gasthof Schwarenbach vorbeikommt. Dieses Gasthaus ist Gegenstand einer Kurzgeschichte von Guy de Maupassant, die in einer Sammlung mit dem Titel \u201ele Horla\u201c ver\u00f6ffentlicht wurde. Die Genauigkeit der Beschreibungen l\u00e4sst darauf schliessen, dass de Maupassant die Gemmi \u00fcberquerte und die Geschichte geh\u00f6rt hatte, die ihn zu seiner Kurzgeschichte inspirierte.<\/p>

Nach dem Vorbeikommen von Schwarenbach dauert es nicht lange, bis man eine grosse Ebene, die Spittelmatte, erreicht. In dessen N\u00e4he verl\u00e4uft die Kantonsgrenze. Etwas weiter folgt man dem Schwarzbach und steigt \u00fcber den Gurnigel ins Gasterntal ab. Dieser Ort ist der einzige, an dem ich Alpen-Akeleien sehen konnte. Doch war es zu sp\u00e4t in der Saison, um noch welche sehen zu k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>

Unten im Gasterntal angekommen folgt man der Kander bis nach Kandersteg. Aufgrund der Hitze, die dann herrschte, hatte sich dieser Wildbach in tosendes Wasser verwandelt und die Umgebung erinnerte mich an Calames Gem\u00e4lde \u201eGewitter auf der Handeck\u201c.<\/p>
